Best Time to Visit Benagil Cave (Month by Month)

Trying to decide when to book your Algarve holiday? If visiting Benagil Cave is on your list, timing can make a big difference. This guide breaks it down month by month — so you can choose the perfect time for your trip.

After five years of guiding tours daily, we've seen Benagil Cave in every season. Each has its own character. This guide breaks down the pros, cons, and insider trade-offs — so you can choose what matters most to you.

High Season: June – Early September

Warmest waters
Water

18–23°C

Air

28–38°C (occasionally 40°C in heatwaves)

Rain

Minimal

Pros

  • Warmest sea temperatures of the year — more comfortable for kayaking
  • Long daylight hours give you flexibility to book early and avoid crowds
  • Generally stable weather with minimal rainfall
  • All tours, restaurants, and services are fully operational

Cons

  • Heavy crowds on the water — dozens of kayaks and boats at peak times
  • Early start required — parking and access become difficult quickly
  • Wind often picks up in the early afternoon, making the sea choppier
  • Limited availability — last-minute bookings are rarely possible in peak season
  • Heat can be intense, especially during midday tours
Pro tip: If you're visiting in summer, book a morning tour before 10:00 AM. You beat the crowds, the sea is calmer, and you finish before the parking situation becomes a nightmare.

Shoulder Season: April – May & Late September – October

Pros

  • Good balance of weather, sea conditions, and fewer crowds
  • Comfortable temperatures — warm without extreme heat
  • Significantly fewer crowds — a more relaxed experience at the cave
  • Better availability — easier to book without weeks of planning
  • Beautiful late-summer light, especially in September

Cons

  • More variable sea conditions — some days may be perfect, others not suitable
  • Occasional swell can limit access to certain caves
  • Water temperature can still feel cool in early April
  • Some days may require rescheduling depending on conditions
Pro tip: Early June and Late September are often the best balance of conditions and crowds — but no month is perfect every day or guaranteed.

Off-Season: November – March

12–21°C

Crowds

Minimal

Higher chance of rain in December, January

Pros

  • You can have the caves almost to yourself
  • No crowds on the water means a more intimate, mysterious experience
  • Accommodation is 40–50% cheaper than summer
  • More dramatic scenery when weather changes
  • Perfect for adventurous travelers who value solitude over comfort

Cons

  • Highly dependent on conditions — not every day is suitable for tours
  • Swell can restrict access to the caves
  • Shorter windows of good conditions compared to summer
  • Cold water, especially in winter months
  • Flexibility is key — plans may need to change last minute
Pro tip: Winter tours depend on sea conditions. If swell is high, we cancel or reschedule — so book with flexibility in mind.
